What Are the Dangers of Parabens in Skin Care?

Parabens are synthetic preservatives used in foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and personal care products such as deodorants, moisturizers and shampoos. Parabens allow skin care products to survive for months or even years in your medicine cabinet; however, they also enter your body through your skin when you use these products. The body can absorb as much as five pounds of cosmetic chemicals every year. Parabens can mimic hormones in the body and disrupt functions of the endocrine system.

Parabens are potentially bad for a number of reasons. They affect people in different ways. Many products that come into contact with skin contain parabens, which often cause irritation of the skin. This is particularly true for adults, children or babies with sensitive skin. If you or your child has sensitive skin you may find that moisturizers, shampoos, and bath products, which contain parabens, may be causing the skin problems. Common skin problems associated with parabens include dermatitis, rosacea and other allergic reactions.

The phrase “Paraben Free” means that the product contains no parabens. Everyone can benefit from using paraben-free products because parabens negatively affect the health of all ages.
